Taichung City to host East Asian Youth Games
2014-10-28
Central Taiwan’s Taichung City will host the 2019 East Asian Youth Games, according to the East Asian Games Association Oct. 24.
Featuring 10 Olympic and two non-Olympic sports, the games bring together 2,300 world-class athletes from the nine EAGA members—Taiwan, Guam, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea and mainland China.
Formerly known as the quadrennial East Asian Games, the event is set for Aug. 3-10, 2019, and expected to generate more than NT$10 billion (U$328.9 million) in revenues. It is organized by the Olympic Council of Asia every five years commencing 2019.
Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee President Lin Hong-dow said Taichung was chosen over Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar on the strength of its balanced proposal and snappy presentation.
“Taichung presented an eco-aware, resource-saving proposal tailored for the athletes,” he said. “The city deserves to be Taiwan’s first to host an OCA event and has laid the foundation for bringing further large-scale meets to these shores.”
According to Taichung City Government, the 12 venues used for the games are in the city center, with only three built for the event. The layout is projected to minimize transportation requirements and slash emissions created by the athletes and support personnel by 1,442 tons.
