Technology, art zone launched by New Taipei City

2014-10-28

A zone dedicated to technology and art was unveiled Oct. 25 at Daguan Art Education Park in Banqiao District by New Taipei City Government.

One of the headline pieces is “New Taipei City Night Market,” a mural made with cardboard boxes and paper cups. The large-scale art project, set against the backdrop of the bustling downtown skyline, took 100-plus schoolchildren more than 20 days to finish.

“Every child is blessed with a unique talent to create art,” New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu said at the unveiling. “With activities such as the annual art education month and the establishment of dedicated art zones, we are creating space for children to give free rein to their artistic expression and sensibility.”

The initiative was co-organized by NTCG and Ymm Children’s Art Education Center. Other projects debuting include a 2-meter-tall 3-D horse made from over 5 tons of shredded newspaper, and a recreation of Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) painting “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains” fashioned out of recycled plastic bags and waste wood.

A total of 14 recycled art projects will call Municipal Daguan Elementary School their permanent home. The aim is to promote art education and ecological preservation, with the initiative introduced to other schools in the city going forward.

Daguan Art Education Park was launched by the NTCG Education Department in November 2013. It connects five campuses in the Banqiao and Fuzhou areas as a way of fostering educational art and culture development.

Institutions taking part in the program are Municipal Daguan Elementary and Junior High schools, National Overseas Chinese Experimental Senior High School, National Taiwan University of Arts and Zhongshan Elementary School.
