Digital Performing Arts Festival gets underway

2014-10-27

Digital Performing Arts Festival, Taiwan’s premier showcase of mixed media and technological innovation in the performing arts, kicked off Oct. 24 at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei City.

Themed Trans-Quadrant, the Ministry of Culture-organized event features five major performances underscoring its digital development since debuting in 2010. Activities for this year’s edition are scheduled for Chiayi County, and Kaohsiung and Taipei cities through Nov. 16.

“Art and technology may seem unrelated at first glance, but deep in their roots both set out to explore the unknown, turning the intangible tangible,” MOC Minister Lung Ying-tai said.

According to Lung, this point is hammered home by the recent invitation for Taiwan artists to take up residence at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, at its Geneva facility. “The upcoming collaboration is expected to strengthen the nation’s presence in the global venture going forward,” she said.

Curated by Chiu Chih-Yung, a mass communication professor at Taichung City-based Providence University, the festival’s lineup includes local acts Body Expression Dance Theatre, HH, Very Mainstream Studio and YiLab with Japanese stage set maestro Ryoya Fudetani.

Six other groups backed by the MOC will also take part, delivering experimental performances and a series of digital installation exhibitions at the monthlong festival.
