Taiwan galleries gear up for Art Taipei 2014

2014-10-24

Three Taipei City-based galleries recently staged preliminary exhibitions in preparation for upcoming Art Taipei 2014, one of the biggest fairs of its kind in Asia.

“The warm-up shows and other efforts made by these participants in Art Taipei underscore the event’s significance in its 21st year,” an official with Taiwan Art Gallery Association said Oct. 22. “They also offer a tantalizing taste of the creative smorgasbord showgoers can expect to experience.”

Bluerider Art Corp., Galerie Grand Siecle and Nunu Fine Art debuted a selection of artworks, with “Addicted at Birth” by U.S. artist Jonathan Paul, aka Desire Obtain Cherish, stealing the spotlight.

Consisting of three baby dolls dressed in designer brands and attached to IV bottles carrying familiar logos, the piece provides a vivid reminder of how modern society is obsessed with brands.

Another Paul artwork of interest was a painting of late U.S. music luminary Michael Jackson made from 6,500 drug capsules, a salient reminder of the dangers of Hollywood stardom.

Running Oct. 31 to Nov. 3 at Taipei World Trade Center Hall No. 1, Art Taipei involves 145 galleries from 15 countries and territories showcasing more than 3,000 creations from 500-plus artists. These include Chen Chieh-jen from Taiwan, Marc Chagall and Salvador Dali from France and Spain, respectively, as well as Chu Teh-chun from mainland China.
