Awards breathe new life into Taipei’s old buildings
2014-10-17
Old Building New Life Awards were presented to three urban renovation projects Oct. 15 in Taipei, underscoring the city government’s commitment to sustainable development through environmental re-engineering.
We Do Group’s studio, situated in historical Dadaocheng, claimed gold in the prestigious awards. The two-story building had been empty since 2005 after suffering serious damage from construction work on a neighboring property.
Erected over a century ago, the structure was a dental clinic before the grandson of the owner, also the group’s lead lighting designer, decided to give it a facelift out of respect for his late grandfather.
Smith & Hsu’s Hengyang teahouse collected silver. After renovation, the three-story traditional building blends the unique atmosphere of the old neighborhood and its artistic style with modern elements.
Urban Regeneration Station 27M—the former office of Taipei City’s Water Department located in Yangmingshan—bagged bronze. The structure, now a venue for community activities, is recognized for fitting in seamlessly with the surrounding environment.
Hun Co-Working Space and Nanjichang Community Food Bank in Daan and Zhongzheng districts, respectively, earned special awards.
First presented by Taipei City Urban Regeneration Office two years ago, the annual event is an extension of a project launched in 2001 aimed at enhancing awareness of urban landscape.
“Our urban renewal policies focus on renovation of old communities rather than reconstruction of derelict buildings,” a URO official said. “The awards are intended to promote a sustainable city and coexistence between humans and old buildings.”
Themed Creation, Revival and Coexistence, this year’s competition attracted a total of 57 entries. It also features guided tours, seminars, workshops and a photo exhibition.
