NPM hosts Pacific conference on museum computing

2014-10-16

Taipei City-based National Palace Museum is set to co-host the Pacific Neighborhood Consortium annual conference Oct. 21-23, spotlighting the facility’s role in utilizing cutting-edge information technology in daily operations.

“We are genuinely delighted to see this event return to Taipei after five years,” NPM Director Fung Ming-chu said. “The main focus will be advances in museum computing, which is increasingly important as a means of bridging communities, cultures and sciences in the digital era.”

Co-hosted by Academia Sinica, Taiwan’s top research institution, the three-day conference features six keynote speakers addressing how an IT-enabled approach is transforming museums around the globe. Fung and National History Museum Director Chang Yui-tang are expected to share experiences in applying innovative digital and mobile technologies to visitor interactions in their respective facilities.

Other speakers include President James Cuno of California-based J. Paul Getty Trust and Professor Sarah Kenderdine of Australia’s University of New South Wales. Two renowned librarians, Professor Steve Ching of City University of Hong Kong and Michael Keller of Stanford University, will also share their expertise.

“With 21 diverse subtopics ranging from digital art history and massive open online courses to value-added applications in the post-digital era, we expect this year’s conference to attract over 200 experts and scholars from 10 different countries,” Fung said.

Founded in 1993 at the University of California, Berkeley, by late Chancellor Tien Chang-lin, PNC provides a platform for exchanging academic resources throughout the region. Its Asia Center was established in Academia Sinica 17 years ago to further advance the initiative.
