2014-10-16

International Forum on Natural Dyes and World Eco-fiber and Textile Forum Taiwan kicked off Oct. 14 in Taipei City, underscoring government efforts enhancing the global standing of the related local sector.

“Hosted for the first time by Taiwan, this three-day event is an outstanding opportunity to showcase the strength of our natural dye industry and creativity of local designers,” Minister of Culture Lung Ying-tai said at the opening ceremony. “We are excited to see participants from around the world engaging in exchanges of all levels through various event activities.”

Themed Toward an Eco-Future, the forum involves close to 400 artists and industry professionals from 28 countries and territories. It also features a two-day presentation seminar, exhibitions and field visits to design centers in Miaoli County, Nantou County and Taichung City.

One highlight of the forum is a fashion show displaying 72 sets of high-end clothing incorporating natural dyes by 12 designers from seven countries. The lineup also includes works by Taiwan artist Sophie Hong and Atayal aboriginal weaver Yuma Taru.

First held in 2010, the forum also comprises a handicraft market and workshops for nontrade visitors to learn more about natural dyes.
