NMMST exhibition spotlights polar wonders

2014-10-07

An exhibition on the ecosystems of Antarctica and the Arctic by National Museum of Marine Science and Technology kicked off Oct. 4 in Keelung City.

Staged in conjunction with National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung, the event showcases the efforts of local and international researchers. It also features an exhibition of species specimens collected by NMMST scientists during past expeditions and video demonstrations of such attractions as polar lights.

“We are pleased to introduce the richness of the Antarctic and Arctic worlds through this exhibition,” an NMMST official said. “It is also important to provide a platform for spotlighting the nation’s research work.”

One highlight of the exhibition is a series of Arctic photos taken by NMMST scientist Liao Yun-chih during a three-month research project in 2010. Another is a guided tour of Hai Gong—a 1975 ROC government experimental vessel. The ship completed four exploration missions in Antarctica during its 18 years of service before retiring in 1993. It is now on display at Keelung’s Bisha Fishing Port.

Running until Jan. 4, 2015, the event also includes displays on the adventures of renowned British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, as well as a massive humpback whale model designed to raise awareness of the importance of ocean conservation.
