Bumper medal harvest for Taiwan at Asian Games

2014-10-06

Taiwan athletes enjoyed their biggest day at the Asian Games to date, bagging eight silvers and four bronzes Oct. 2 in Incheon, South Korea.

Two-time bronze medalist Chang Ming-huang came literally within an inch of gold in the men’s shot put competition after leading the first four rounds with a throw of 19.97 meters. But he was pipped at the post in the final round and had to settle for silver after record-holder Sultan Abdulmajeed E Alhebshi from Saudi Arabia beat him by a mere 2 centimeters.

Chang Chu-han, Chang Yun-chuan, Chen Wei-han and Pan Hung-ming all medaled in the canoe and kayak slaloms, taking silver in the women’s kayak singles, men’s canoe singles, women’s canoe singles and men’s kayak singles, respectively.

On the softball park, the Taiwan women’s team defeated its mainland Chinese rivals 4-3 earlier in the day but ran out of steam against Team Japan in the championship game 0-6. They took home the country’s third silver in the competition.

In soft tennis, men’s doubles pairs Li Chia-hung and Lin Ting-chun and Ho Meng-hsun and Lai Li-huang earned silver and bronze, respectively. Chen Yi-chia and Cheng Chu-ling captured bronze in the women’s doubles.

Other local athletes to mount the podium were bowler Wang Ya-ting, silver medalist in the women’s masters; Chen Yen-ming, bronze winner in the men’s Taekwondo 63-kilogram class; and Chuang Chia-chia, who won bronze in the women’s Taekwondo 62-kilogram class.

As of Oct. 2, Taiwan was 12th in the medal standings with eight golds, 17 silvers and 18 bronzes.
