This year’s Taiwan-France Cultural Award was presented to France-based international music trade show Midem and the European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan of Germany’s University of Tubingen.
“The Ministry of Culture would like to thank these two outstanding organizations for their contributions to promoting Taiwan culture in Europe,” MOC Deputy Minister George Hsu said at the Oct. 1 ceremony in Paris.
The award was co-founded by the ministry and Institute of France in 1996 to honor distinguished European individuals or groups that have helped advance a better understanding of Taiwan in Europe, or facilitated cultural exchanges between the two entities.
France’s Midem was recognized for providing a world-class platform for Taiwan musicians and record labels. “With the MOC’s support, Taiwan has been one of the most active and prominent Asian participants at Midem over the years,” said Bruno Crolot, director of the music trade event.
“Through its participation at the annual show, Taiwan has burnished its reputation as the gateway to the global Chinese-language music industry. Midem is proud to have played a role in making this happen.”
The award attracts keen interest in Europe from the public as well as industry insiders and academics, University of Tubingen professor Gunter Schubert said. As founder and director of the ERCCT, he reaffirmed the center’s commitment to popularizing European research on Taiwan.
“The ERCCT will continue to boost academic dialogue between the two sides. The annual Taiwan documentary film festival and the ongoing academic exchange program have been a mainstay of our activity since the center’s foundation in 2008. We look forward to enhancing research activity as a result of the prize.”
