ROC men’s golfers claim gold at Asian Games

2014-09-30

Taiwan’s men’s golfers turned in golden performances Sept. 28 at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, claiming top-of-the-podium honors in the individual and team events.

Pan Cheng-tsung, the world’s No.1 amateur player, took gold after finishing the tournament 17-under-par. Following in his footsteps, Yu Chun-an won bronze, helping the team relegate South Korea to second and Thailand to third.

According to Pan, the secret of the team’s success at the games is self-belief. “Believing in your teammates is part and parcel of good teamwork,” he said.

Other Taiwan athletes also performed well at the games, medaling in archery, tennis and baseball.

After Taiwan took its first silver in the women’s team compound archery Sept. 27, Kuo Cheng-wei collected bronze in the men’s individual recurve competition the next day.

Taiwan’s impressive run in the baseball ended with a silver medal following a 3-6 loss to favorites South Korea in the final. Coach Lu Ming-tzu urged fans to cut the team some slack. “Please don’t be too hard on the boys, they really did their best,” he said.

As of Sept. 28, Taiwan is seventh in the medal standings with seven golds, five silvers and 11 bronzes.
