2014-09-29

Taiwan athletes turned in top-notch performances at the Asian Games, adding a gold and silver medal to the nation’s tally Sept. 25 in Incheon, South Korea.

Hsiao Mei-yu claimed gold in the women’s cycling omnium, defeating her mainland Chinese rival Luo Xiaoling 227-213 in the two-day event. Hsiao outperformed all other cyclists in four of the six races comprising the contest, but at the end of the fifth, was ahead of Luo by only four points.

“I did not panic, because I knew Luo wouldn’t be able to hold up given her physical condition,” Hsiao said.

Prior to the gold, Hsiao claimed two bronzes in the women’s team sprint and pursuit events. The latest addition brings her career medal count at the quadrennial event to two golds, one silver and three bronzes.

In the rowing the same day, Wang Ming-hui and Yu Tsung-wei won silver in the men’s double sculls with a time of 6 minutes 29.11 seconds. They were third after the first 500 meters, but moved up to second by the 1,000-meter mark, finishing less than 5 seconds behind the mainland Chinese pair. This was second career silver for Wang at the games and first for Yu.

As of Sept. 25, Taiwan is sixth in the medal standings with five golds, three silvers and six bronzes.
