2014-09-29

The annual Shilin International Cultural Festival gets underway Sept. 27 in Taipei, underscoring city government efforts aimed at enhancing ties between Taiwan and the international community.

“We are extremely pleased to host the event and boost exchanges across a broad spectrum of areas, particularly people to people,” a city government official said. “Entering into its 15th year, the festival is a must for lovers of culture from home and abroad.”

Jointly organized with the embassies of Haiti and Tuvalu, as well as the representative offices of Mexico, Oman and Spain, the event features an array of activities including games and music performances.

A highlight of the festival is games involving eight local traditional toys such as bamboo dragonflies, guns made from wooden chopsticks and spinning tops. Another is exhibits of exotic toys from the event’s five co-hosting nations.

The festival also offers jazz and hip-hop performances by students from Taipei American and European schools in Shilin, as well as a special exhibition of cultural artifacts from Haiti running Sept. 30 to Oct. 30 at Shilin Public Assembly Hall.
