2014-09-29

The winners of the Good 10 Creative Tainan design competition were recently announced, showcasing the innovative spirit of the southern Taiwan city and its vibrant cultural and creative sector.

“We are pleased to see so many leading-edge designs in the fourth year of the contest,” a Tainan City Government official said. “This is testament to the wealth of Tainan’s design talent and reaffirms the value of the event as an important platform for designers to grow and share their ingenuity.”

First place went to a handbag by Tainan brand Feity for its exquisite design inspired by the shape and exterior of old houses in Tainan, second to wrapping paper by the Ansel Shih team for its retro patterns of traditional windows and tiles and third to an umbrella by Recollection Cultural and Creative Co. featuring images of Chinese religious icon the eight generals.

The seven merit awards were given to such items as a coaster by designer Cheng Pei-che, Tainan tourist site-themed postcard by Friction Creative and purse by San Tsai Design. A total of 12 honorable mentions went to submissions like a journal notebook by Huang Ssu-hsuan and lamp shade by Tsai Wan-chen.

Winners were selected from a field of 122 entries submitted by 100-plus companies and individuals. The designers of the top three products will receive awards and prize money of NT$50,000 (US$1,666), NT$30,000 and NT$20,000, respectively, while the merit-award winners each receive NT$10,000.

In addition, the top three designers earn the right to sell their winning pieces at the souvenir shops at the city’s historic sites in 2015.

The presentation ceremony will be held at Tainan Creativity Center in late December.
