Taiwan’s industrial production index gained 7.03 percent year on year to 110.66 in August, the second highest level on record, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs Sept. 24.

“Output has been on the rise for seven straight months, showing the country’s industrial sector is continuing to pick up steam,” said Yang Kuei-hsien, deputy director-general of the MOEA Department of Statistics.

Among the five subindexes comprising the overall benchmark, manufacturing, which accounts for 93 percent of the weighting, increased 7.2 percent from a year ago.

Construction surged 20.99 percent, while electricity and gas supply, quarrying and mineral extraction, and water supply also posted gains of 0.64 percent to 1.32 percent.

Within the manufacturing sector, electronic components and parts rose 12.83 percent to an all-time high. Computers, electronics and optical products increased 14.98 percent, while machinery and equipment were up 12.66 percent.

Yang said the country’s industrial production is expected to remain healthy in September as the manufacturing sector further expands in line with the rebounding global economy and strong demand for mobile devices.

Separately, the MOEA said the latest commerce revenues stood at NT$1.21 trillion (US$40.21 billion) in August, up 2.2 percent from a year ago. By sector, sales of food services and beverages gained 4.9 percent, followed by retail at 4.5 percent and wholesales at 1.2 percent.

The ministry forecasts commerce to stay on the growth track in September as the local economy gains momentum.
