Taiwan takes 2 more golds at Asian Games

2014-09-26

Taiwan’s golden run at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, continued Sept. 24, with top-of-the-podium finishes in the women’s tennis team event and bowling singles.

Chan Yung-jan and Hsieh Su-wei overcame their mainland Chinese rivals 2-1. In the singles, Chan defeated Duan Yingying 7-6, 7-6 but reigning French Open women’s doubles champion Hsieh went down 6-3, 5-7, 2-6 to former Wimbledon semi-finalist Zheng Jie. The doubles proved decisive with Chan and Hsieh dispatching Zhang Shuai and Zheng 6-2, 7-5.

Following the victory, Hsieh praised her teammates Chan Chin-wei and Chan Hao-ching. She also singled out Chan Yung-jan for special mention. “If my partner had not played so well, we could never have made it this far,” she said.

In the bowling, Chou Chia-chen scored 1,291 points in six games to defeat Singapore’s New Hui-fen by 20 points.

According to Chou, she usually scores between 190 to 200 points per game on average, with the tally of 157 in the sixth round coming as a surprise. “Perhaps the poor performance was due to my tiredness after rising at 5:40 a.m.,” she said.

Chou is confident the team can add to her gold medal at the games. “We are not content with just one gold,” she said. “A target of taking at least two golds home is firmly in our sights.”

Other medal performances for Taiwan on the day were silver in the wushu women’s sanda 60-kilogram class by Kao Yu-chuan and bronze in the women’s weightlifting 69-kilogram class by Huang Shih-hsu.

As of Sept. 24, Taiwan is seventh in the medal standings with four golds, two silvers and six bronzes.
