Medal haul continues for Taiwan at Asian Games

2014-09-24

Taiwan claimed three bronze medals respectively in the men’s team badminton, men’s wushu nanquan and nangun, and women’s track cycling team pursuit at the Asian Games Sept. 22 in Incheon, South Korea.

In the men’s team badminton event, Taiwan collected bronze after losing to South Korea in the semi-finals. The medal is Taiwan’s first in that category at the games.

The men’s singles matches, which made up one aspect of the team’s score against South Korea, saw Chou Tien-chen lose 12-21, 17-21, while Hsu Jen-hao went down 12-21, 18-21. In the doubles, Lee Sheng-mu and Tsai Chia-hsin were defeated 10-21, 13-21.

Team coach Chen Chih-hao said all of the athletes did their very best but conceded they had more to learn from their opponents.

In Chinese martial art wushu, Hsu Kai-kuei took bronze with scores of 9.64 in nanquan, or southern boxing, and 9.65 in nangun, or southern clubs.

At the velodrome, Hsiao Mei-yu, Huang Ting-ying, I Fang-ju, and Tseng Hsiao-chia defeated their Japanese rivals by pedaling to bronze with a time of 4 minutes, 37.148 seconds in the women’s track cycling team pursuit.

Team coach Hsu Te-rei said the team performed well despite having its number increased from three to four just before competition.

“Of course mainland China is the most promising team, but Taiwan is on par with Japan and South Korea,” he said. “Basically the teams adjusting best to the last-minute change were going to medal.”

As of Sept. 23, Taiwan stands 14th in the medal rankings with gold, silver and five bronzes.
