Firefly Movie Theater set for Penghu County tour

Firefly Movie Theater will conduct a three-day screening tour in outlying Penghu County Sept. 26, underscoring government efforts to promote high-quality Taiwan-made films nationwide.
“We are extremely excited to organize this tour and bring touching tales to movie lovers in Penghu,” an official from the Ministry of Culture said. “In addition, we aim to inspire all with messages of love and hope consistently conveyed by the films’ characters in the face of adversity.”
The lineup comprises three films: “Bridge over Troubled Water” directed by Yang Li-chou, “The Golden Child” by Chou Hsu-wei and “The Lost Sea” by Hung Chun-hsiu. Each movie, which will screen once during the tour, is followed by seminars attended by the directors and leading critics.
“Bridge over Troubled Water” is based on the exploits of the tug of war team from Jiasian Elementary School in Kaohsiung City. It also showcases the life struggles of Jiasian District residents post-Typhoon Morakot.
Morakot struck Taiwan Aug. 8, 2009, leaving 681 people dead and causing an estimated NT$110 billion (US$3.3 billion) in damage. It is one of the most devastating disasters to affect the nation.
“The Golden Child” is a black comedy featuring a local pig farmer and his Vietnamese wife confronted with life choices in the face of a multimillion dollar international hotel project set for their community. “The Lost Sea” chronicles the ecological impact of land development projects on horseshoe crabs in outlying Kinmen County and raising awareness of environmental protection.
Firefly will visit 50 locations this year, with earlier screenings taking place in such cities as New Taipei, Taichung and Tainan. The next stops are Yunlin, Hualien and Taitung counties in that order.
