Huwei sugar refinery dorm wins historic status

2014-09-24

A century-old wooden dormitory complex at Huwei Sugar Refinery in central Taiwan was recently listed as a historic monument by Yunlin County Government’s Cultural Affairs Department.

“The decision is a major step toward the eventual restoration of this important piece of industrial cultural heritage,” a local preservation activist said. “These historic residences made of precious cedar and cypress must be returned to their former glory as way of preserving Huwei’s rich history and the local sugar industry.”

A total of 11 dorm blocks built after the refinery was established in 1906 during the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945) are still standing. Huwei was one of Taiwan’s three main sugar refineries and remains in operation.

“We are looking forward to working with Taiwan Sugar Corp. to showcase Huwei’s sugar-refining history,” Township Chief Lin Wen-bin said, adding that possible plans for the site include repurposing rail lines used to transport sugar for tourist use and transforming some of the dormitories into visitor accommodation.

“Through protection, restoration and enhancement, we believe the complex can enjoy a new lease of life and help maintain the proud heritage of Taiwan’s sugar capital.”
