New Taipei spotlights documentary filmmaking

2014-09-16

New Taipei City International Documentary Forum concluded Sept. 14, underscoring the local government’s efforts to enhance the film genre and boost its global profile.

“Documentaries are an effective way of chronicling city developments,” New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu said. “We have pulled out all stops in boosting growth of these movies and related production in the city over the past four years.”

“In addition to hosting this event, we aim to showcase the strength of local films at next year’s Chinese Documentary Festival in Hong Kong and similar events across Europe.”

The inaugural three-day forum featured six renowned industry professionals from across Asia, including Akira Yoshizawa of Japan Broadcasting Corp., Bae Ki-hyung of Korea Broadcasting System and Ong Hee-yah from MediaCorp Pte Ltd. in Singapore.

Overseas participants engaged in robust panel discussions with local moviemakers such as Wu Fan, organizer of Taiwan International Documentary Festival, on an array of issues such as strategies for local governments to bolster the documentary industry.

The forum also included free screening Sept. 12-14 of eight films such as “Red Box” from Taiwan, “On the Edge of Heaven” from South Korea and “Supermen of Malegaon” from India.
