Traditional Chinese characters as a living writing system is the theme of the annual Chinese calligraphy festival Sept. 6 to Dec. 21 in Taipei, according to the city government's Department of Cultural Affairs.
The DCA is staging a series of citywide events celebrating the versatility of the Chinese writing system in everyday life, DCA Commissioner Liou Wei-gong said Sept. 8.
“As Taiwan is the only nation in the world to live and breathe the legacy of traditional Chinese characters, a comprehensive policy is needed to translate this heritage asset into contemporary culture. Chinese calligraphic art is the perfect means to underscore the metropolis’s unique place in the world."
This year’s festival kicked off with a series of activities held every weekend through Oct. 5. A new generation of award-winning Taiwan calligraphers will demonstrate the beauty of this refined art in selected cultural sites across the city, including recently renovated Kishu An Hall.
Other upcoming events include exhibitions, masterclasses, musical performances, poetry recitals, street calligraphy and topical forums.
In addition, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of revered cursive script master Yu You-ren, there will be a dedicated exhibition and international conference to honor the late Control Yuan president’s contribution to the art.
The wrapping tape designed exclusively for the event features Yu’s script, illustrating the diverse applications of Chinese characters in the local cultural and creative scene, Liou said.
