Hualien gears up for OrigSound Music Festival

2014-09-11

OrigSound Music Festival will kick off Sept. 13 at Hualien Cultural Creative Industries Park, spotlighting the culture of local aboriginals and diversity of eastern Taiwan.

“It is important to showcase the talents of Hualien County’s many artists spanning music, arts and design,” an official from the Ministry of Culture said Sept. 9. “We also aim to promote the event as a must-attend cultural celebration in eastern Taiwan.”

The festival generated a record 30,000-plus visits in 2012, the official said, adding that an even better number is expected this year on the strength of an eclectic lineup of performers and activities.

Themed beautiful day, the event runs until Sept. 21 and features performances by more than 20 local bands such as Echo, Quarterback and Wonfu, as well as indigenous singers like Suming Rupi and Biung Tak-Banuaz. Other highlights include two music contests showcasing student and indie bands, respectively, from Hualien and around Taiwan.

In addition, the festival is hosting eight culture-related seminars by local designer Akibo Lee and indigenous Paiwan dancer Bulareyaung Pagarlava, who once performed with New York-based Martha Graham Dance Company.

A total of six blue installation artworks created by indigenous Paiwan artist Pahawlan Cilan, as well as an exhibition of guitars contributed by local rocker Ayal Komod and other bands attending the event, is expected to prove popular with the visitors, the official said.
