The winners of this year’s Taipei Master of Traditional Arts Awards were announced Aug. 30, recognizing the contributions of those dedicated to preserving the richness of the city’s cultural landscape.

Wang Jen-hsin and Wu Ming-hsia received honors for their long-term devotion to performing and promoting Taiwan opera across the nation. Taipei City Deputy Mayor Chang Chin-oh presented the awards, describing their efforts as pivotal in building greater appreciation for the performing art.

“We are extremely privileged to recognize these divas,” he said. “The beauty of a city lies in its culture and history, with traditional arts occupying a lofty status.”

Wang, who has been acting for more than 60 years, holds a central role in the development of the distinct opera. Wu—a performer from age four—is active in raising the awareness of Taiwan opera among the public. She once served as a television program producer and introduced the concepts of TV show production to the art.

“Whether through workshops or stage performances, Wang and Wu never tire of promoting the many charms and unique beauty of Taiwan opera,” Chang said. “We salute them for their efforts.”

In response, the pair said they were deeply touched by the awards and will continue driving the development of Taiwan opera to new heights.
