Taiwan readies for APEC leaders’ summit

Preparations for the participation of Taiwan in the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders’ Meeting are proceeding as per normal, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sept. 2.

“The ministry will handle procedures in accordance with protocol,” MOFA spokeswoman Anna Kao said. “Related details will are not to be disclosed.”

Sources familiar with the matter confirmed that Gong Qinggai, deputy director of mainland China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, delivered the leaders’ meeting invitation during his Aug. 25-30 visit to Taiwan.

Scheduled to take place Nov. 10-11 in Beijing, the leaders’ meeting involves heads of state and special envoys from APEC’s 21 member economies. A highlight is expected to be the economic dialogue between U.S. President Barack Obama and mainland Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
