2014-09-02

The Taiwan women’s team recorded an impressive medal performance of three golds and a bronze at the Tug of War International Federation championships Aug. 28-31 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Comprising four students and five alumnae from Taipei Jingmei Girls’ High School, the team contested the TWIF Outdoor Club and World Championships. In the former, it won gold in the 540 and 500 kilogram senior classes, while in latter, it claimed bronze in the 540 kg and gold in the 500 kg senior classes.

Taiwan has now defended the women’s 500 kg title in club and world championships twice since first winning four years ago in South Africa.

Head coach Guo Sheng said he was overjoyed with the results and will redouble training efforts going forward. “Our athletes have matured greatly and can now go head to head with the best teams from Europe.”

Echoing Guo’s remarks, Jingmei Principal Lin Li-hwa said the team overcame great adversity in the shape of injuries and indifferent early form to come through at the end with a string of strong performances.

“The team was exhausted after two long days of continuous competition,” she said. “But they put this behind them and pulled with all their might for the medals.”
