Taiwan won two medals in the individual and group categories at the inaugural International Paragliding Accuracy Championship Aug. 22-24 in Sarangani, the Philippines.
Team leader Luis Liu clinched the individual title after defeating 40 other contestants from 13 countries. He also achieved one of the two best performances in the tournament, landing within three centimeters of the bull’s eye in the third round.
“Winning the championship came as an unexpected honor for me,” Liu said. “I hope the exceptional performances of Taiwan paragliders in international events such as the IPAC can boost the nation’s presence in the sport.”
Liu, who boasts 25 years of paragliding experience, also helped Taiwan take second place in group competition. He collected prize money of 40,000 pesos (US$912) for his efforts, while the team’s other three members—Chen Ho-cheng, Chiang Chiao-yu and Lo Ku-shan—shared 20,000 pesos.
The three-day IPAC is the first international paragliding competition held in the Philippines. It attracted competitors from Taiwan, Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, the Philippines, U.K. and U.S.
