Winners of the Brighter Society Journalism awards were announced Aug. 25 by Taipei Journalists’ Association, recognizing media professionals producing news reports documenting positive aspects of local life and human nature.
Twelve teams from nine local media outlets won honors in four prize categories of the awards for best print, radio and TV coverage, as well as best print photography.
“We are extremely proud of the achievements of the recipients,” said awards judge Chiang An-kuo, chair of the Department of Communication at Yilan County-based Fo Guang University. “Their reports have inspired numerous viewers and readers to embrace their own life challenges with courage and faith.”
According to Chiang, the most moving awarded piece is a picture depicting 20-year-old amputee Kuo Wei-chi at the summit of the Jade Mountain in April. The shot saw Chang Nien-tsu and Wu Si-ping of United Daily News emerge as the sole winners of the award for Best Print Press Photography.
Chang and Wu’s coverage also garnered an award for Best Print News Story. The other winners in this category were Chen Yi-wei of Central News Agency for his story on a Taiwan-born Finnish boy finding his relatives, as well as Li Shu-jen and his 16 United Evening News colleagues for their Unforgotten Stories series.
Best TV News Story awards went to reporters at Taipei-headquartered Chinese Television System, CNA’s Global View, Eastern Broadcasting Co. Ltd., Formosa Television and Tatun Cable Network.
In addition, Best Radio News Story awards were garnered by staffers at Good News Broadcasting Association, Chengsheng Broadcasting Corp. and National Education Radio.
The winners, whittled down from a field of 150 submissions, will receive awards and a share of the NT$350,000 (US$11,600) in prize money Sept. 1 at an official presentation ceremony in Taipei.
