2014-08-25

No stone will be left unturned in developing Taiwan’s intelligent handheld device sector as it is crucial to the local economy, Premier Jiang Yi-huah said Aug. 21.

“The government has a vital role to play in helping the industry adopt a user-centered approach in pursuing new devices and services for the ever-changing market,” Jiang said at a briefing by the Ministry of Economic Affairs on the sector.

“Taiwan is a key player in the global smart handheld device industry and the government will use this industrial strength to assist local businesses further.”

As innovative apps are driving the development of new devices, the premier directed the MOEA and other related agencies to continue paying close attention to the creation of next-generation handhelds and to foster breakthroughs in critical components.

According to Jiang, the government will also boost the sector’s industrial upgrade and application services on the back of the Cabinet’s broadband services and industry development program.

MOEA Minister Duh Tyzz-jiun said the ministry has already invested NT$2 billion (US$66 million) in the first half of the year to help commercialize results, while the private sector has put in NT$18 billion during the period. In addition, the MOEA has adopted a streamlined approach to help Taiwan manufacturers develop a comprehensive industry chain, he added.

Further measures include enhancement of local makers’ technological capabilities for key components and promotion of cross-sector cooperation on new apps through boosting fourth-generation national coverage.
