2014-08-21

Taiwan’s record medal haul of two golds and a bronze earned the country a best-ever eighth place finish at the close of the 11th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) Aug. 18 in Krakow, Poland.

Chin Hsiao-jung and Li Yi-ting claimed gold, while Wu Ting-yu took bronze at the seven-day event. A total of 144 students aged 16 to 19 from 36 countries and territories contested the olympiad.

According to National Taiwan Normal University’s Department of Geography, which oversaw training for the four-member team, the golds were the first for Taiwan since the country debuted at the event in 2005.

“We are extremely proud of the remarkable achievements of the students,” a department official said. “But we will not rest on our laurels and will keep helping young talents grow and shine at the competition.”

One of the International Science Olympiads, iGeo was first staged 18 years ago in the Netherlands. The upcoming edition is set to be held next year in Russia.
