New Taipei City-based Team-Win Lion Dance Theatre will depart Aug. 14 on tour of Northern Europe, performing in Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Sweden, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The lion is an auspicious symbol in Taiwan,” MOFA Vice Minister Vanessa Shih said. “It is the perfect representative for local culture and conveying the goodwill of the people.”
The vice minister made the remarks at a send-off news conference Aug. 12 at MOFA headquarters in Taipei City. Also attending the event include New Taipei City Cultural Affairs Department Commissioner Tony Lin and troupe advisor Lin Te-fu.
According to Shih, the tour is testament to the government’s commitment to building ties between Taiwan and Northern Europe. “We expect the troupe to boost the global profile of Taiwan culture and demonstrate the vibrancy of the local performing arts sector,” she said.
Led by Chen Chin-yi, a director with Team-Win Lion Dance Theatre, the 10-member troupe will stage two performances in each nation, including city celebrations in Latvia’s capital Riga, before wrapping up the tour Sept. 2 in Sweden.
“The performances feature drumming, lion dancing and pole jumping, as well as appearances by the electric-techno neon gods,” Shih said. “It is anticipated the eye-catching shows will clearly demonstrate Taiwan’s dynamic spirit of creativity and innovation.”
