Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung received a Paraguayan delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Víctor Alfredo Verdún Bitar Nov. 24 in Taipei City, highlighting government commitment to strengthening partnerships with the South American ally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Lin began by thanking Paraguay President Santiago Peña and the government for publicly speaking in support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations over 50 times in the global arena. The minister noted that President Lai Ching-te attaches great importance to bilateral cooperation with Paraguay, adding that the president has instructed the MOFA to continue work on cooperative initiatives under the Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project in areas spanning carbon rights, new energy, smart agriculture and medical care, while expanding economic, investment and trade collaboration.

In response, Verdún Bitar expressed appreciation for Taiwan’s longstanding support in Paraguay’s personnel cultivation, public health and technological development. He stressed that President Peña staunchly supports Taiwan-Paraguay friendship and that the two countries share values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, and concluded by pledging to continue backing Taiwan’s engagement in the global community.

Following the meeting, the delegation was received by Vice Foreign Minister Ger Bau-shuan. Ger praised Paraguay’s investment environment and called it a gateway to access the regional market. He added that the government is drafting policies to encourage enterprises to invest in Paraguay and explore more economic and trade opportunities.

Verdún Bitar lauded the successful results of bilateral collaboration, citing a memorandum of understanding on carbon credit cooperation signed in October, and the popularity of Paraguay’s beef and pork in the Taiwan market. He also exchanged opinions with participants on issues across a wide range of sectors.

According to the MOFA, since Taiwan and Paraguay established diplomatic relations in 1957, the two countries have enjoyed close cooperation in agriculture, public health, medical care, personnel cultivation and technology. President Peña’s voice of support for Taiwan in the U.N. General Assembly for consecutive years further demonstrates a solid partnership between the two countries, the ministry said.
