President Lai Ching-te emphasized that Taiwan will expand exchanges with Tuvalu to jointly increase contributions to the world.
Lai made the remarks while receiving a delegation led by Tuvalu Prime Minister Feleti Penitala Teo Nov. 18 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The meeting followed a welcome with full military honors in the plaza in front of the PO, according to the office.
In his remarks, the president noted that the government has been actively promoting the Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project since he took office, citing a joint communique on deepening comprehensive partnership signed by him and Teo during his visit to the allied nation last December. A bilateral panel formed under that framework produced a treaty to boost reciprocal prosperity set to be signed after the meeting, he added
Lai said the two sides will also sign a collaborative agreement on fishing cooperation and a letter of intent on sports exchange, noting that fishing issues are a key concern for Teo. He added that joint efforts to cultivate athletes are expected to enhance global visibility for both sides.
Teo said the new treaty marks the first time bilateral cooperation will be grounded in a legal framework, strengthening joint work on climate action, cultural exchange, economic development, education, food security and sanitation. He also thanked Taiwan for nearly five decades of assistance in infrastructure construction, medical services and scholarships, the PO said.
Teo pledged to continue supporting Taiwan’s participation in the U.N. and related agencies, just as he did at this year’s U.N. General Assembly and the Pacific Islands Forum.
The signing ceremony for the three pacts took place after the meeting, followed by a reception hosted by Lai at noon, the PO added.
