VP Hsiao gives interview to Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

2025/10/21

Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim gave an interview to Chris Brown of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in which she discussed issues including expanded Taiwan-Canadian cooperation, Taiwan-US ties and the semiconductor industry.

According to the Presidential Office, Hsiao said Canada and Taiwan both embrace freedom and democracy and share complementary strengths in many areas. Canada is a major supplier of agricultural products to Taiwan, while Taiwan contributes to Canada’s manufacturing sector by providing key technological components and parts, she added.

The VP thanked Ottawa for reiterating the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, evidenced by sending naval vessels through the region as part of its Indo-Pacific Strategy to ensure freedom of navigation, and signing a memorandum of understanding in August on dark vessel detection system cooperation. Hsiao hoped to see Canada support Taiwan’s bid to take part in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Hsiao also reflected on the Taiwan-U.S. relationship in the interview, saying the two share robust trade, economy and supply chain ties, reflected in the strong partnership between Taiwan’s semiconductor sector and Silicon Valley. Unlike China’s economic coercion, Taiwan enjoys a role as a trusted economy that supports U.S. re-industrialization plan and artificial intelligence development, she said.

Citing the acclaimed documentary “Invisible Nation,” the VP said it is unfair that many countries in the world do not recognize Taiwan. Despite this, the government will continue to serve as a force for good by advancing progress for the global community, Hsiao said, adding that the country welcomes the increased support from the international community.

Ongoing conflicts around the world serve as a reminder that peace cannot be taken for granted, the VP said, adding that the government is enhancing Taiwan’s national defense budget to deter China’s aggression and send a clear message that war is not an option, as there is no winner in a conflict.
