President Lai Ching-te said Sept. 30 that Taiwan is committed to leveraging its high-tech advantages to strengthen cooperation with the U.S. in the fields of agricultural innovation technology and food security to benefit both sides.
Lai made the remarks while receiving Luke Lindberg, U.S. Department of Agriculture under secretary for trade and foreign agricultural affairs, at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
According to the president, Taiwan is the U.S.’ seventh largest trading partner and seventh largest agricultural export market, while the U.S. is Taiwan’s largest overseas investment destination and largest agricultural export market. Such a strong bond demonstrates the potential for the two sides to further deepen agricultural and trade collaboration, he said.
Lai also cited the visit of an agricultural trade goodwill mission sent by Taiwan to the U.S. in September, noting that members signed letters of intent during the trip to purchase US$10 billion in beef, corn, soybeans and wheat over the next four years. He added that the moves will help accelerate Taiwan’s livestock industry production efficiency and enhance the country’s food security.
The president went on to say that Lindberg’s visit shows the firm and steady pace of deepening strategic economic and trade partnership between the two countries. He added that having a key role in global non-red supply chains, Taiwan will continue to work with the U.S. and other like-minded partners to safeguard peace, stability and prosperity around the world.
In response, Lindberg said that the U.S. has contributed to Taiwan’s food security evidenced by the fact that 25 percent of Taiwan’s imported agricultural products and food come from the U.S. The under secretary further announced that the U.S. decided to open its market to Taiwan-grown pineapples and looked forward to seeing the bilateral relationship continue to grow and prosper.
