Taiwan, UK sign MOU on semiconductor personnel training

The Taiwan-U.K. Memorandum of Understanding on the Semiconductor Joint Skills Project was concluded Sept. 11 via video link, reflecting commitment to expanding personnel and other exchanges in the key sector.
 
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the pact was signed by Taiwan Rep. Vincent Chin-Hsiang Yao in London and his British counterpart Ruth Bradley-Jones in Taipei. Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu and U.K. National Technical Advisor Dave Smith were present in Taipei to witness the signing.
 
Wu noted the complementary nature of both countries’ semiconductor sectors and praised the MOU as a milestone development. He said the British Department for Science, Innovation and Technology again sent a delegation to the SEMICON Taiwan 2025, reflecting close bilateral interaction.
 
Yao said the MOU followed the three pillar agreements concluded this June under the Taiwan-U.K. Enhanced Trade Partnership arrangement. Under the pact, both sides agree to expand student exchanges to gain first-hand experience in semiconductor industries and research ecosystems, he said, adding that he expects to see more bilateral cooperation in sectors such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, drones and next-generation satellite communications.
 
Bradley-Jones stated the MOU is the first of its kind between Taiwan and a European partner country. She added that the pact will benefit students and industries on both sides, and pave the way for further bilateral cooperation.
 
Smith welcomed the pact to enhance cooperation on personnel training, especially amidst a global shortage in the high-tech sector. He looked forward to expanded cooperation in advanced sectors such as compound semiconductors, silicon photonics and quantum technology.
 
The MOFA said the MOU underscores the government’s integrated diplomacy policy, adding that it will help build a values-based, resilient high-tech supply chain, in line with President Lai Ching-te’s vision of promoting global semiconductor supply chain partnerships for democracies.
