The Ministry of Transportation and Communications’ Central Weather Administration hosted the 6th edition of the Taiwan Weather Enterprise Forum Aug. 19 in Taipei City, underscoring government commitment to fostering innovation in the marine meteorological industry.
The event was organized in collaboration with Taiwan Climate Services Partnership, Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research and Japan Weather Association, the CWA said, adding that the event was themed around new opportunities in the blue economy, including technological development and cross-sector applications.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, CWA Administrator Lu Kuo-chen emphasized that the ocean plays a key role in regulating climate and driving weather systems. As climate change intensifies, mastering ocean observation data and improving early warning capabilities is key to strengthening climate resilience and promoting sustainable development, he said.
Lu went on to add that the administration continues to leverage artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and machine learning to refine its monitoring and forecasting technology while offering marine meteorological services to help coastal residents, fishers, shipping companies and tourists stay informed of changing weather.
Lu Shiau-yun, director-general of the Cabinet-level Ocean Affairs Council’s Ocean Conservation Administration, said the OAC is working to strengthen the country’s smart sea transport, marine tourism and resource management.
During a keynote speech, JWA representative Kuniaki Matsuura shared Japan’s experience integrating oceanography and meteorology, the CWA said.
Additionally, TCSP President George Tai-jen Chen stated that as a communication platform between official government agencies and private operators, the alliance will continue to coordinate academic, governmental and industrial resources to jointly explore innovative application models for meteorological services in areas such as the blue economy, local governance and net-zero transition.
