2025/08/19

President Lai Ching-te advocated for sustainability in national health care services and implementation of the net-zero emission policy by 2050.

Lai attended a forum on sustainability organized by the Taiwan Climate and Health Alliance Aug. 17 in Taipei City. The alliance was established in 2024 and comprises 62 hospitals and medical associations.

The president said that climate change is a challenge that impacts both this and the next generation, and in response established the Climate Change Response Committee in 2024. The committee proposed national carbon reduction goals of 28%±2 by the year 2030 while NT$900 billion (US$29.99 billion) would be allocated to transition to net-zero emissions for environmental, social and governance sectors.

Lai noted that since last year the Ministry of Health and Welfare supported 40 medical facilities such as hospitals and clinics to undergo carbon emission analysis and verification as part of a drive toward net-zero emissions. In direct health care, he stated that NT$ 6.8 billion (US$226.6 million) has been allocated to enhanced cancer screening, including lowering the age for certain checks.

Lai extended his appreciation to the MOHW and the medical sector for collaborative work on Healthy Taiwan projects, the PO stated.
