Taiwan takes part in Pacific port authorities conference in Canada

2025/08/18

A delegation from the Taiwan International Ports Corp. attended the 111th conference of the Association of Pacific Ports Aug. 10-11 in Nanaimo, Canada, to share the country’s success in port operations and promote cross-border exchanges.

According to the TIPC, the group, led by its President Wang Chin-jung, shared with the participants that despite the challenging global maritime market, the TIPC recorded its best ever revenues of NT$22.8 billion (US$7.6 billion) in 2024.

The delegates also outlined progress on various major port projects in Taiwan, including the inauguration of Evergreen Marine Corp.’s seventh container terminal in Kaohsiung Port, and ongoing facility improvements elsewhere at the southern Taiwan port as the TIPC continues its digital and sustainable transitions.

During the panel discussion sessions, the delegates said the numbers of foreign cruise tourists have been hitting record highs in recent years, with the TIPC expecting the figure to reach a best-ever 360,000 arrivals this year. The firm is working with cruise ship companies and strengthening ties with nearby ports to raise Taiwan’s profile as an Asian cruise destination, the TIPC added.

Another highlight of Taiwan’s participation was the inking of a sister port pact between Kaohsiung and the conference’s host city. Nanaimo joins the Port of Vancouver and Fraser River Port as the third Canadian port to sign such an agreement with Taiwan.

According to the TIPC, Wang also announced at the event that Taiwan will host the 2032 APP conference in Taichung City. This will be the fifth APP conference held in Taiwan, following the 2024 edition staged in Kaohsiung.
