Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said July 2 that Taiwan is committed to strengthening cooperation with the U.S. and jointly promoting global development and prosperity.

Hsiao made the remarks while attending a reception celebrating the 249th U.S. Independence Day organized by the American Institute in Taiwan. Other high-profile attendees included Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and AIT Director Raymond Greene.

The relationship between Taiwan and the U.S. is going from strength to strength amid uncertain global geopolitics, the vice president said, quoting prior comments by Greene on the two sides’ robust collaboration spanning education, health, security, technology and trade, as well as efforts to jointly establish creative economic systems, societal resilience and more secure supply chains.

The two sides’ economic bond is an important pillar of Taiwan-U.S. partnership, Hsiao said, adding that they are negotiating for shared progress and prosperity regarding the pending U.S. tariff on Taiwan imports.

The vice president went on to say that the close trade and investment ties between the two countries are deep and rooted in complementary strengths in sectors ranging from semiconductors and high-end manufacturing to digital services and clean energy innovation. A strong Taiwan will further contribute to global prosperity, as well as the U.S.’ goal to reindustrialize and become a technological leader in artificial intelligence and cutting-edge industries, she added.

According to Hsiao, security is key to the country’s development, and maintaining peace requires unity and strength. The country is determined to defend its democratic way of life and will not pursue conflict, she said, describing Taiwan as a land of the free and the home of the brave and expressing appreciation for the staunch bipartisan support from the U.S. government and people.

In reference to the event’s baseball theme, Hsiao said the Taiwan-U.S. relationship has been steadily built inning by inning. She concluded by saying that the two countries are a champion team when they work together.
