Lai pledges to shape Taiwan into AI hub

2025/05/27

President Lai Ching-te said that Taiwan has a responsibility for the world’s future development and is ready to act as a technological focal point in the artificial intelligence era.

Lai made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Global Semiconductor Supply Chain Partnership Forum May 23 in Taipei City. Organized by the Hsinchu County-based Industrial Technology Research Institute, the event brought more than 700 academics, business representatives and other professionals to Taiwan.

According to the president, Taiwan ranks first globally in the integrated circuit manufacturing, packaging and testing industries. He said that the country can improve cooperation with additional segments of the supply chain in Japan, the Netherlands and the U.S. to continue developing Taiwan’s semiconductor industry.

Lai went on to address the issue of price dumping in the sector, citing China’s subsidies to its steel, solar panels and automobiles industries as similar examples. Countries should unite and cooperate as partners to prevent unfairly low prices from hindering growth and innovation in the global semiconductor sector, he said.

In addition to Taiwan’s internationally recognized hardware, the government is committed to making software advances to further boost the AI industry, Lai said. It plans to work with the private sector to draft policies that improve legal mechanisms and provide financial assistance and tax incentives, the president noted, adding that authorities are also working to establish more data centers and supercomputers.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Minister Kuo Jyh-huei hosted the event’s first seminar, which focused on Taiwan’s semiconductor development amid geopolitical challenges. According to the ministry, he elaborated on the initiative proposed by President Lai Ching-te to support semiconductor supply chain partnerships between global democracies, and discussed methods of attracting investment from foreign enterprises, creating a reliable global chip market and building an international talent network.
