Secretary-General Kung Ming-hsin of the Executive Yuan is attending the SelectUSA Investment Summit underway through May 14 in National Harbor, Maryland, highlighting the government’s commitment to deepening economic and trade cooperation with the U.S.
The EY said 183 representatives from 138 domestic enterprises are joining this year’s conference, which facilitates connections with U.S. companies, economic development organizations and industry specialists.
Speaking at a reception hosted by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office May 11 in Washington, D.C., Kung said that Taiwan has become the U.S.’s seventh largest trade partner, with a bilateral trade volume of US$157.9 billion, up 34 percent from the previous year. He added that U.S. exports to Taiwan have also increased by double digits.
Kung also said that Taiwan continues to expand economic involvement in the U.S., and the collective investment by the country’s firms exceeds US$100 billion and has created over 400,000 job opportunities. The secretary-general cited Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.’s establishment of fabrication facilities in Arizona as not only the single largest direct foreign investment project but also a way to help the U.S. forge a homegrown semiconductor supply chain, adding that Taiwan would also expand procurement in the fields of agriculture, energy and national defense to diversify trade with the U.S.
Kung called on the U.S. Senate to expedite the passage of an agreement to avoid double taxation as one way to improve the investment climate. He also advocated for collaboration spanning advanced semiconductors, artificial intelligence and quantum computing, the EY said.
