Taiwan condemns China’s military drills, vows to maintain regional peace

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly denounces China’s recent launch of joint military drills around Taiwan and urges Beijing to immediately halt any unwarranted military provocations that could escalate cross-strait and regional tensions.
In a statement released April 1, the MOFA said China has continued to conduct military intimidation and maritime gray-zone operations near Taiwan, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the Philippines and in the South China Sea. Such actions challenge the rules-based international order, unilaterally undermine the Indo-Pacific status quo and incontrovertibly demonstrate that China is a destabilizing force in the region and beyond, the ministry added.
Maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is a matter of international consensus and serves the interests of all parties, the MOFA said. China’s continuous intimidation of Taiwan and neighboring countries via military drills seriously jeopardizes peace, stability and security in the Indo-Pacific and does not serve to improve its international image, it added.
Echoing the ministry’s statement, the Cabinet-level Mainland Affairs Council called China a “troublemaker” and condemned it for refusing to renounce the use of force, which the council said is evidence of Beijing’s strong hostility towards Taiwan.
The MAC went on to say that the government will continue implementing the Four Pillars of Peace action plan and 17 strategies proposed by President Lai Ching-te to counter China’s infiltration and attempts to force unification, while strengthening whole-of-society defense to safeguard its freedom and democracy. The country is determined to oppose China’s efforts to annex Taiwan, the council said, further calling on democracies worldwide to continue to support Taiwan and curb China’s expansionist ambitions in order to preserve cross-strait and regional peace and stability.
