MOFA thanks Belgium, Japan, US for support

Support for cross-strait stability expressed recently by Belgium, Japan and the U.S. is deeply appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth met with his Japanese counterpart Gen Nakatani March 30 in Tokyo, where they expressed concern over China’s military actions near Taiwan and reiterated opposition to any unilateral changes to the status quo in the East and South China Seas by force or coercion, the MOFA said, adding that they also underscored the importance of Taiwan Strait peace and indicated that they would strengthen cooperation with Australia, South Korea and the Philippines to forge a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Following the United States-Japan Joint Leaders’ Summit Feb. 7, the two countries released a statement that once again highlighted the importance of maintaining cross-strait stability, reflecting the global democratic consensus to preserve peace in the Taiwan Strait, the ministry said.
Similarly, the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation recently reaffirmed its backing of the European Union Indo-Pacific Strategy released by the EU in 2021 and urged peace in the Indo-Pacific in its 2025 policy proposal submitted to the country’s Chamber of Representatives. The 2021 document stressed that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would have a severe impact on Europe’s economy and politics and thus called on all parties to avoid any provocations that could trigger conflict.
The policy proposal came after the Belgian Chamber of Representatives’ March 20 passage of a resolution voicing concern over China’s escalating coercion toward Taiwan, the MOFA said, adding that this signifies the country’s unified administrative and legislative support for safeguarding Taiwan Strait peace.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung emphasized that Taiwan would continue to work closely with like-minded partners to defend democratic values, strengthen supply chain resilience and jointly promote Indo-Pacific prosperity.
