MOTC stages seminar on bird strike prevention

2025/03/31

A seminar on prevention of bird strikes was held by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Civil Aviation Administration March 27 in Taipei City, highlighting government commitment to flight safety.

Hosted by CAA Deputy Director General Fang Chih-wen, the event brought together over 60 academics, experts, officials, airline representatives and airport operators. Participants used cormorants and Orthoptera insects as examples in discussing the issue.

According to the CAA, the discussion topics spanned domestic and international bird strike reports, shared experience of prevention work by Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and explored possible threats to flight safety from insect behavior by using airport landscape and soundscape as ecological indicators.

Participants further talked about bird strike prevention information system applications, the employment of eBird—an online database of bird observations with real-time bird distribution and density information—as wild bird management, and reviews of the Jeju Air crash that resulted from bird activity at Muan International Airport in South Korea last December, the administration said.

The CAA added that the aim of the seminar is to promote exchanges and deepen professional knowledge to jointly create a safer aviation environment.
