The Preparatory Office for the National Museum of Modern Art Tainan was inaugurated March 25 in southern Taiwan, marking another milestone in the government’s work to recognize the country’s art history.
During the launch ceremony, Culture Minister Li Yuan called the new museum a response to public calls to preserve Taiwan’s modern cultural legacy through its own perspective, in its own way.
Li said since the Ministry of Culture launched the “Reconstruction of Taiwan’s Art History” project in 2018, a total of 867 artworks and 90,000 pieces of historical data have been collected and around 8,000 artifacts restored. The initiative received resounding public support, he said, citing the donation of the entire Sun Ten Collection.
During the event the families of 14 other prestigious artists, including Chen Cheng-po, Kuo Po-chuan, Yang Yu-yu, Kuo Hsueh-hu and Pan Li-shui, also signed letters of intent pledging to donate artworks to the new museum, the MOC said, adding that their support is immensely appreciated by the government.
Tainan Art Museum Building 2 has been set aside as the site for the future museum, the ministry said. To mark this historical development, “The Formosa Era: The Intellectual Enlightenment of Early Modern and Modern Art in Taiwan” exhibition is being held at TAM-2 to showcase works by local artists born before 1950.
The MOC said it hopes to lay legal foundations and complete research and planning for the new museum within two years, adding that the new facility’s permanent exhibition will display domestic art from 1895 to 1960.
