2025/03/25

Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming signed a memorandum of understanding with Luís Neves, CEO of Global enabling Sustainability Initiative March 21 in Taipei City to advance economic growth and environmental sustainability.

GeSI is a global alliance of industry leaders from the information and communications technology sector. Peng noted that the group has collaborated with the European Commission on multiple projects, especially those aimed at leveraging methods from the ICT field to support the European Union’s sustainable development goals and European Green Deal.

The minister said that digital technology is the key to sustainable development in the face of climate change, adding that through the pact, the two parties can jointly explore the use of Net Carbon Impact Assessment Methodology for ICT Solutions along with the Digital with Purpose Performance Framework certification, both of which can facilitate the fulfillment of domestic ICT industries’ net-zero goals.

Additionally, Peng indicated that Taiwan was eager to learn from GeSI’s experiences and develop its own voluntary carbon markets and smart low carbon cities, utilizing innovative technologies to expedite green digital transition.

In response, Neves said that Taiwan is a global leader in ICT as well as a hub of technological innovation, adding that GeSI has made considerable progress in artificial intelligence, smart cities, and a collaborative platform for innovation that it operates in cooperation with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Iris Liu, vice president at Taiwan Mobile and GeSI board member in attendance at the signing, spoke with confidence of GeSI’s potential to integrate Taiwan’s technological edge into the international network and the two parties would contribute to the advancement of global sustainability.
