The unwavering support for cross-strait peace and stability recently expressed by President Donald Trump of the U.S. and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is deeply appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Presidential Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Feb. 8.
The remarks appeared in a joint leaders’ statement released after Ishiba and Trump’s Feb. 7 summit in Washington. The leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of security and prosperity for the international community.
In the document, they encouraged the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues and expressed support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. The two leaders also underlined their strong opposition to China’s attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion in the East China Sea as well as its militarization, provocative activities and unlawful claims in the South China Sea, it added.
In response, the PO described the strong international consensus on the importance of Indo-Pacific peace and stability that already exists. The office added that as a responsible member of the global community, Taiwan will continue strengthening its self-defense capabilities as it deepens its trilateral security partnership with the U.S. and Japan while cooperating with like-minded countries to uphold the rules-based international order.
The MOFA expressed similar sentiments and mentioned the country’s Four Pillars of Peace action plan. Taiwan is also committed to working with partners including the U.S. and Japan to ensure peace, stability and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and throughout the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added.
