2025/01/14
Premier Cho Jung-tai attended the joint delivery, launch and naming ceremony of four ROC (Taiwan) Coast Guard vessels Jan. 10 in the southern city of Kaohsiung, underscoring the government’s commitment to bolstering marine security through indigenous shipbuilding.
The Ocean Affairs Council has allocated NT$42.6 billion (US$1.3 billion) to domestically build 141 new vessels between 2018 and 2027, Cho said, adding that the ships will help the OAC’s Coast Guard Administration protect Taiwan’s territorial waters.
According to the premier, the powerful 600-ton missile corvette Chang Bin will be instrumental in guarding the country’s seas, while the CG 612 craft, newly christened Suao, is the same class and will serve a similar role. Two patrol boats were also launched, the PP-10096 and PP-3525, with the former being the CGA’s largest such vessel at 100 tons and the latter the fastest at 35 tons.
Speaking at the ceremony, Cho thanked the Kaohsiung-based Jong Shyn Shipbuilding Co. for its part in advancing the government’s indigenous shipbuilding project. He added that the corporation’s work has helped forge a solid foundation for coastal defense while stimulating the development of the domestic sector.
The government will continue enhancing Coast Guard personnel training and providing cutting-edge equipment to enable the country to work closely with global democracies to safeguard regional security, the premier concluded.
