2025/01/13

The Ministry of Education and National Taiwan University signed a letter of intent for cooperation with 16 medical institutions Jan. 9 in Taipei City, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting young athletes and creating a better sports environment.

The ceremony was hosted by Fang Jui-wen, deputy director-general of the MOE’s Sports Administration, and NTU Executive Vice President Chang Shan-chwen. Attendees included academics, experts and representatives of educational facilities and the city governments of Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung, as well as Taiwan swimmer Wang Kuan-hung and taekwondo athlete Lin Yu-hsuan.

According to the MOE, as the institution responsible for establishing a regional medical care network in Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung, NTU is set to work with seven hospitals, including National Taiwan University Hospital and Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taipei, Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital in New Taipei and the Keelung branch of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, as well as nine rehabilitation and physiotherapy clinics, to launch fast-tracked care for athletes. Through an exclusive channel, athletes can seek diagnoses and receive immediate services like computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging so they can return to training as soon as possible, the ministry said.

NTU was designated as a regional center under an MOE initiative subsidizing the hiring of athletic trainers at educational institutions starting in 2013, the ministry said, adding that the initiative granted regional centers the authority to assess and assist athletic trainers while integrating medial resources and promoting injury prevention and care education.

During his remarks, Fang said the LOI exemplified interdisciplinary public-private collaboration to establish a medical care network for promising young athletic talent. He also thanked NTU for combining the expertise of medical institutions and urged more facilities to take part.

Echoing Fang’s remarks, Chang said the fast-track clinic provides convenient, high-quality medical care for athletes. The channel will help ensure good health and elevate performance, he added, calling on the public to continue to support young sports competitors.
