The Taiwan-Japan meeting on maritime affairs cooperation concluded Aug. 26 in Taipei City, highlighting commitment on both sides to expanding mutually beneficial ties and strengthening bilateral communication to safeguard maritime order in the region.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting was convened by Taiwan-Japan Relations Association Chair Su Jia-chyuan and Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Chair Mitsuo Ohashi.

The Taiwan delegation comprised officials from the Ocean Affairs Council and its Coast Guard and Ocean Conservation Administrations; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; National Academy of Marine Research; Nuclear Safety Commission; National Science and Technology Council; and the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries Agency.

During the sixth edition of the event, the two sides held in-depth discussions on topics spanning fishery cooperation, marine ecology, science and energy development as well as maritime security, the MOFA added.

Earlier the same day, Premier Cho Jung-tai received Ohashi and the delegation at the Executive Yuan and thanked the JTEA chair for his positive contributions to the two-way relationship. Cho hoped that Japan would support Taiwan’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership to enable further contributions to regional peace and prosperity.

In response, Ohashi said there would be no more conflicts if the world could take inspiration from the warm and friendly relations between Taiwan and Japan. It is hoped that the partnership would continue expanding, he said, adding that it is his mission to keep fostering friendly ties.
